20 students stabbed at Franklin Regional High School in Pennsylvania
A male student is in custody this morning after 20 students were stabbed at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville.
Dan Stevens, Westmoreland County public safety spokesman, said the the school's resource officer called 911 at 7:13 a.m. to report multiple patients involved in a stabbing.
Stevens said 20 students were injured, four of whom were flown to various hospitals. The male suspect, who is a student, is being questioned by Westmoreland County detectives and Murrysville police.
Stevens said the incident happened in "numerous first-floor classrooms and hallways." He said most the stab wounds were to the victims' extremeties. The assailant used a knife in the attacks.
All of the victims are students. Stevens does not believe the students' injuries to be life-threatening.
Students are being reunited with their parents. The families of the victims are being notified.
"We'll get additional information as we get it," Stevens said.
Valley News Dispatch City Editor Matt Provenzo described the scene shortly after 7 a.m. as he was dropping his ninth-grader son, Marc, off at the high school.
He said dozens of students streaming from the school. "You could hear that the fire alarm had been pulled," Provenzo said. Securities guards then began herding the students to the football field, Provenzo said.
Provenzo said he was stuck waiting in his car for about 90 minutes while the scene played out in front of him. He said more than a dozen ambulances, as well as area police departments, arrived at the school.
He said the scnene was "remarkably calm and orderly." "It was not like pandemonium or panic or anything like that." The high school students were eventually taken to themiddle school on campus.
As of 9 a.m., Provenzo was waiting at the middle school to pick up his son. Students were being released three at a time.
The stabbings are believed to have occurred in a hallway inside the school. An alert on the district's website states "A critical incident has occurred at the high school. All elementary schools are cancelled, the middle school and high school students are secure. Additional information will be released as soon as possible. "
"Our campus is locked down," Franklin Regional assistant superintendent Mary Catherine Reljac said.
Middle and high school students will be dismissed shortly. She asked the campus be kept clear, as emergency vehicles are still on scene.
